Students & Families

Do you use the Orton-Gillingham method for students?

Yes, The Reading Center has personnel trained to intervene using the Orton-Gillingham method. It is not, however, the only instructional method used to intervene for our students. We prescribe methods based on the developmental literacy profile of our students.

I do not believe that my child has a learning disability, but s/he struggles to read. Can my child receive tutoring services at The Reading Center?

Yes, a learning disability is not a prerequisite for acceptance to The Reading Center. The Reading Center provides intervention and remediation services to those who demonstrate difficulty in one or more areas of literacy.

Will my child be placed in a small group or does the Center provide one-to-one instruction?

Our general practice is to provide one-on-one sessions for our students. Only in rare instances do we work with students in small groups.

Will we need to sign a contract?

Yes, all clients enter into a contractual agreement to ensure continuity of intervention and remediation services.

Does The Reading Center provide scholarships to students?

Currently, we do not have scholarships available. However, we have had donors sponsor students and families in need of our services.

Do you accept insurance for testing services?

Currently, we do not accept insurance. All services are self-pay.

Can I provide previous testing rather than have my child tested again at The Center?

Yes, The Reading Center accepts testing from school psychologists, speech pathologists, and other approved testing professionals. If additional testing is required for us to prescribe intervention and remediation services, then we will need to administer additional tests.

Schools & Districts

Can The Reading Center help us write a grant for our school?

We provide grant writing support services to schools and districts with whom we have conducted a needs assessment and developed a scalable plan to sustain literacy improvement for all students.

We have some funds available for a few PD training sessions. Does The Reading Center provide PD only?

The Reading Center provides training and coaching support to schools and districts seeking to implement scalable literacy plans to sustain literacy improvement for students in general education and special education settings.

Does The Reading Center provide diversity, equity, and inclusion training as a part of your Literacy PD?

The Reading Center is committed to engaging actively in work that supports the mission, vision, and values of our organization; thus, we are intentional about empowering our partners to implement practices and supports that embrace differences and call for deep reflection around bias.

What coaching model does The Reading Center support?

Our coaching model is a stage-based approach. We have three stages of support (train, develop, sustain) during scalable, literacy implementation projects. Accordingly, we assist schools and districts in implementing coaching frameworks best suited for their implementation needs.

We are currently monitoring the progress of some of the schools in our district to determine our next steps. Does The Reading Center support efforts of districts in the early stages of implementation?

Yes. We provide support to districts that are in the premature stages of evaluating the landscape of entities and resources within the system that would affect a scalable plan to sustain literacy improvement in your district.

Community Partnerships

Can The Reading Center help us write a grant?

We provide grant writing support services to community-based organizations with whom we have conducted a needs assessment and developed a strategic plan to implement sustainable, literacy programming and activities aimed to improve educational outcomes for its students and families.

We have children in our community who cannot read. Can The Reading Center provide tutors to help our afterschool program?

The Reading Center is committed to supporting community efforts to provide sustainable, literacy programming and activities for their respective community. We work to build knowledge and capacity among local community organizations and community members to sustain their efforts to improve educational outcomes for students and families.

We have retired teachers in our community who would like to work with some of the kids in our community who cannot read. Can The Reading Center provide training?

Yes. We provide training and support services to community-based organizations with whom we have conducted a needs assessment and developed a strategic plan. In this partnership, we assist organizations’ efforts to identify and utilize viable resources within their community to lead and support sustainable literacy programming and activities that benefit the educational needs of its students and families.

We are working with adults in our community who cannot read and are unable to find employment, can The Reading Center help us?

Yes. We provide training and support services to community-based organizations with whom we have conducted a needs assessment and developed a strategic plan. In this partnership, we assist organizations’ efforts to identify and utilize viable resources within their community to lead and support sustainable literacy programming and activities that benefit the educational needs of its students and families.

Does The Reading Center provide training workshops for parents?

Yes. The Reading Center partners with local organizations to provide parent workshops to build awareness and knowledge among parents in an effort to improve partnerships between schools and communities.
